Race Recap: 2012 Frederick Kids Triathlon

The herd kicked off its 2012 triathlon racing season Saturday at the TRI-TO "WIN-THE-FIGHT" Frederick Kids Triathlon, and with three times more triathletes wearin' the black-white-and-green than last year it was more of a stampede!

The TRI-TO "WIN-THE-FIGHT" Frederick Kids Triathlon is the first stop of the Maryland Youth Triathlon Series, and 2012 spokesathlete Noah Congedo was there to get the kids pumped up and share some tips for staying safe in the sun. When the dust settled, 20 MINI COW TRI CLUB triathletes crossed the finish line, some of them completing their first triathlon with the team, others completing their very first triathlon! COWgratulations Anna, Austin H., Austin V., Benjamin L., Benjamin N., Blake C., Blake O., Emily, Ethan, Hailey, Jordan, Kaitlyn, Katie, Katrina, Max, Mikaele, Shawn, Spiros, Sydney D., and Sydney O.!

Chrissie Wellington May 12 Book Signing

We've met a few professional triathletes over the years, but none as humble and gracious—or as smiley—as Chrissie Wellington. We hoped to be near the front of the line when we arrived at Princeton Sports two hours early for her 11 a.m. book signing, so we were super excited to see that we were first in line! We bought and had Chrissie sign four copies of her new book "A Life Without Limits"—one for us, and one each for a lucky winner at our Splash & Dash at Waverly Woods, Nottingham Kids Triathlon, and Kids Adventure BOOathlon at Knill's Farm Market. We also asked her to sign our copy of Triathlete Magazine—the MINI COW TRI CLUB appeared alongside a picture of Chrissie in the December issue. We even gave her a cow.

Train With a Turtle Rewind

What's cooler than a half-day youth triathlon camp? How about a half-day youth triathlon camp on a college campus. With some pretty cool collegiate triathletes. We thought so too!

The MINI COW TRI CLUB rolled onto the University of Maryland campus May 5, for our very first Train With a Turtle Youth Triathlon Camp. The camp included simulated open water swim training in the natatorium's 50 meter pool, transition tips and relays, a group ride along Paint Branch Trail, and a run across campus to rub Testudo's nose. And let the record be clear that the glazed donut—an offering to Testudo—was there when we arrived. A big thanks to Genevieve, Itziar, Lessley, Megan, Austin, Dave, Mike and Zach from Maryland Triathlon for mentoring our campers throughout the day. And a special thanks to Professor Frick for her fun and engaging discusion around the nutrition needs of the young triathlete.

SPRING BREAK TRIATHLON CAMP: DAY 3

That's a wrap! Day three of our Spring Break Triathlon Camp brought more sunshine, more tips and tricks and more fun! A big MINI COW TRI CLUB thank MOO to Junior Elite triathlete Andrew Gyenis for joining us as a guest coach. Andrew worked with our campers on open water swimming techniques and transition skills and even brought his Team USA kit for a little show-and-tell. In addition to being at the top of the Junior Elite ranks, our campers learned that Andrew won the 4.4 mile Bay Bridge Swim in 2010 with a time of 1:28.45 when he was just 15!

To see all the images from day three of our Spring Break Triathlon Camp, hoof it on over to the gallery.

We'd also like to thank Health Unlimited Family Fitness & Aquatic Center for being such generous hosts, and all the parents of our campers for encouraging their child's interest in multisport.

SPRING BREAK TRIATHLON CAMP: DAY 2

Campers spent day two of our Spring Break Triathlon Camp outdoors, soaking up the sunshine and a few transition tips from Coach Christy, learning proper cycling form and safety, and practicing bike mounting and dismounting.

On our final day of camp Thursday, Junior Elite triathlete Andrew Gyenis will join us as a guest coach to take our campers through open water swimming drills and help Coach Christy as our campers pull together everything they've learned over the first two days during some fun relay races!
