The MINI COW TRI CLUB rolled onto the University of Maryland campus May 5, for our very first Train With a Turtle Youth Triathlon Camp. The camp included simulated open water swim training in the natatorium's 50 meter pool, transition tips and relays, a group ride along Paint Branch Trail, and a run across campus to rub Testudo's nose. And let the record be clear that the glazed donut—an offering to Testudo—was there when we arrived. A big thanks to Genevieve, Itziar, Lessley, Megan, Austin, Dave, Mike and Zach from Maryland Triathlon for mentoring our campers throughout the day.
When Noah was 11 years old his mother was diagnosed with Melanoma. Thankfully, his mother's Melanoma was detected early and treated successfully. But as a runner and triathlete, the experience highlighted for Noah the importance of staying safe while having fun in the sun. Now at the age of 17, the Glenelg High School Honor Student is sharing his experience as spokesathlete of the Maryland Youth Triathlon Series.

I'm hopeful that by sharing my experience and how it changed the way I think about the sun, I can encourage young children to practice sun-safe habits too.

The Maryland Youth Triathlon Series was formed, in part, to drive awareness of Melanoma skin cancer among adolescents and young adults and support the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation. Melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer among young adults ages 25-29 and the second most common cancer in adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old. Based in Maryland, the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation is a leading international voice for Melanoma prevention, detection, care and cure. The Foundation promotes Melanoma awareness through its "WIN-THE-FIGHT" initiatives including the TRI-TO "WIN-THE-FIGHT" Frederick Kids Triathlon.
