SLIDESHOW: 2011 SPRING RIDGE SPRINT DUATHLON
Monday, October 3, 2011 Originally scheduled for August 28, the Spring Ridge Sprint Triathlon fell victim to Hurricane Irene. While being rescheduled, Labor Day came and went and the Spring Ridge Pool closed for the season. So, the Spring Ridge Sprint Triathlon became the Spring Ridge Sprint Duathlon and everyone kept their fingers crossed for better weather on October 2. Cue Mother Nature.
Though the rain had stopped an hour before, when the race began the roads were still wet and the temperature was in the low 40s. Did we mention the wind? Judging by the unclaimed race bibs at check in, more than a few athletes opted to sleep in. That meant the field was smaller than expected, but it also meant those that did show up were of the hearty, determined variety. One of the youngest athletes toeing the line, Anna would have her work cut out for her against athletes two, three and four times her age.
Anna set the pace on the first 1.5 mile run and the 4.5 mile bike, and with some pacing help from Coach Christy on the second 1.5 mile run, crossed the finish line in 41:53, earning Third Place Female Overall. Tri It Now bills this race as a super sprint for ages 10 to 100, so this represents the highest podium finish to date for the MINI COW TRI CLUB Youth Triathlon Racing Team.
Kudos to the folks at Tri It Now for rescheduling the race. It reminded us what makes this sport so great, from its Race Directors that will do near anything for their athletes, to the athletes themselves—many at this event first timers—who are drawn to the sport for its inclusiveness and comraderie.
Next up on our cowendar, the Kids Adventure BOOathlon at Knill's Farm Market presented by the MINI COW TRI CLUB, on October 22, in Mount Airy, MD.
